How I Quit Micro-Managing Others and Got Better Results!

How to Quit Micro-ManagingLetting someone help you can be a good thing or a royal pain.

As a lifelong business owner, it was hard to let go of my attachment to how things got done. No control freak tendencies here. But I did it!

Here’s how I quit micro-managing, so that others could actually help me.

See Things for What They Are

Let’s set the record straight. When you hire people they aren’t going to do things the way you would. It just won’t happen. No matter how detailed your instructions.

Why not? It’s because we’re individuals, as different as snowflakes. I think that’s how the Eskimo saying goes.

The bottom line is that people have different working styles. That’s just the way it is.

Avoid Detail Overload

When delegating, it’s important to shift your focus off of the ‘how to’ details. Instead, focus on the end results.

Now when I say, “This is what I need done” I’m discussing the big picture.

Ask for Input

Like many entrepreneurs, I’m a self-starter. My motto has been, “I’ll figure this out.”

Plus, in the early years, it didn’t occur to me to ask people for their input or ideas. Wow was I missing out.

Today I’ll ask, “What are your thoughts or ideas about this?”

Input from others has made a BIG difference in my business.

Don’t Set People Up For Failure

Depending on someone’s level of self-confidence a person’s fears can get in the way. Here’s what I mean.

In an effort to please you, many of the experts you hire will try to figure things out by themselves. After all they’re supposed to be good at what they do. This can work for you or against you. It all hangs on the solutions they come up with.

Rather than find out, after the fact, that someone didn’t have all the information or resources needed to do the job, I’ve learned to be available throughout the process.

This statement says it all. “Hey, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to talk to me”.

Use My Entire Script

“This is what I need done.”
“What are your thoughts or ideas about this?”
“Hey, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to talk to me”.

The End Result

My open mind and open door policy has worked out very well. Lots of people have my back.

Because I’m no longer micro-managing, the majority of my time is spent doing what I love.

I get to help entrepreneurs and companies to develop their business growth and marketing strategies. YES to that!
